Liverpool have agreed on a transfer fee of £65.5 million from Bayern Munich for their prolific winger Luis Diaz. The winger who is 28 years old has been given the green signal, to leave the training sessions in Tokyo for their pre-season tour, by Liverpool to fly to Germany for his medical with the Bundesliga Champions.
Why Bayern Choose Diaz:
Bayern made Luis Diaz their targeted winger for the summer transfer window after the transfer confirmation of Leroy Sane to the Turkish Giants Galatasaray.
Luis Diaz was also keen on the move from Liverpool to Bayern in the summer of 2024, as there is a move away from the Premier League. The Bundesliga giants were forced to pay the desired fee demanded by Liverpool, as it was fair due to the quality of the player they were bringing to their stadium, and in line with the transfer market.
Liverpool were reluctant to sell their star winger, who had just arrived in 2022 from Porto, also receiving a new contract offer from the club twice to keep him for the long-term project. But for the reboot of the team and the transformation in the front line forced to sell him.
“There are a lot of rumors around it lately, and I cannot go into the specifics. But he is training well with us then we have decided, for now, not to play him yet.”
Diaz was not involved in the pre-season tour match in Hong Kong against AC MILAN where they lost 4-2. In the post-match press conference, the Liverpool manager Arne Slot also clarified that the absence of Diaz is because of a transfer. He said:
“There has been a lot of attention on this situation, and I cannot go into all the details. But he has been training really well with us, and for now we have decided not to play him as he prepares for the transfer”
Liverpool paid a total of €49 million transfer fee, including add-ons, to Porto in 2022 for the Colombian winger. Diaz is expected to depart the Liverpool camp within the next 24 hours as Slot prepares his squad for a meeting with Yokohama F Marinos on Wednesday.
Liverpool is seeking to bring in funds, having this summer signed Florian Wirtz, a long-term Bayern Munich target, and Hugo Ekitike in two of the biggest deals in club history, and it is understood they are exploring other deals too. There are continued links made to Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, who is open to a move away from Newcastle. Darwin Núñez, also linked with a transfer, also did not play against Milan game, though Slot said the Uruguayan forward was absent on fitness grounds.
The transfer of Luis Diaz will bring in money that can be spent in the project of Arne Slot, who is aiming to win the Premier League Title again, second time in a row and is eying to lift the Champions League title this year.
