Alejandro Garnacho Joins Chelsea: What Led to the Transfer

Alejandro Garnacho is an Academy player of Manchester United. He has developed and excelled when playing for the under-18s. Ralf Ragnick, the former interim Manager of United, gave him his debut against Chelsea on April 22, 2022, in a Premier League match.

After the Sacking of Ragnick, Eric Ten Hag was appointed as the New Manager of Manchester United, under whom Garnacho has showcased his abilities to the fullest and shone when the team needed him most, scoring crucial goals, providing matchwinning assists and entertaining the United Fans with his skills.

In the first season under Ten Hag, Garnacho made 34 appearances across all competitions, scoring 5 goals and providing 4 assists. Flashes of brilliance marked his performances, though Ten Hag emphasized the need for consistency and better decisionmaking.

Breakthrough Campaign Of Garnacho Transfer:

20232024 was Garnacho’s most productive season under Ten Hag. He became a regular in the squad, often playing on the left or right wing, and delivered several standout performances. He played 50 matches in which he scored 10 Goals and provided 5 assists across all competitions. He also scored a fabulous Bicycle kick against Everton that won the FIFA PUSKAS AWARD of the Season.

Breakout with Manager:

When Garnacho was playing under Ten Hag, he praised him as a footballer who has immense potential and someone who can achieve great success, but he also indicated the drawbacks that can prevent him from achieving those heights.

Ten Hag always mentioned that he has to be decisive in every moment and he needs to understand the play and the players so he can distinguish when to go for a goal and when to pass the ball for an assist. He also criticized Garnacho for his disciplinary actions, such as arriving at training early and his behavior with the United fans.

When Ten Hag got the sack, the new Manager of Manchester United Ruben Amorim, arrived with a completely different style of play than Eric Ten Hag. Amorim used a 3-4-2-1 formation in his Sporting days that he carried to Manchester United, completely changing the dynamics of the team, as United in their history, has never played that system before.

This caused a major backlash in the United dressing room. This system basically consisted of attacking midfielders as compared to the vintage flashy wingers United used to play in the past. Garnacho, who was meant to be the successor of Cristiano Ronaldo at United, a versatile Winger was no longer needed at his favoured position and was told by the manager to adapt to the New system to be a starter at the club. This caused the communication between the manager and player to be difficult as Garnacho didn’t want to play in a different position than the one he favoured and Ruben Amorim stuck to his style of play.

Garnacho’s Transfer:

All of the above factors contributed to Garnacho looking for another club where he can fulfill his potential while playing in one of the best leagues in the world.

Chelsea Football Club has approached Manchester United in order to sign their young Argentinian star. United, who had a green light from the manager to sell Garnacho to fund his other signings in the transfer window, to implement his style of play to make a better team that could compete for the top four.

Chelsea tried to take advantage of the situation of Garnacho and tried to pay as little as possible for this deal because they had the upper hand but United resisted selling their player for a cheap transfer fee. This led to a delay in the transfer of Garnacho while the summer transfer window was closing in about a week.

Chelsea agreed to pay a generous transfer fee of about €40 million to Manchester United for their young Argentine winger to join Chelsea for a fee close to £40m, signing a sevenyear deal with the club, with a 10% sellon clause but without any add-ons.

The Transfer of Garnacho is finalized as Fabrizio Romano has reported on his social media, and we can expect an official announcement soon.
